Brown expands research, launches center
August 2016
SHARING OPTIONS:

PROVIDENCE, R.I.—Brown University will be applying a new five-year, $11.5-million grant from the National Institutes of Health to expand its computational biology research and launch a new Center of Biomedical Research Excellence. The center will support five early-career faculty members in exploring the genomics underlying diseases like cancer, preeclampsia and severe lung infections. Five projects launched at the center in June, with focuses including: the genomic and cellular mechanisms underlying tolerance of viral and bacterial co-infection in the lung; new drug targets for extending healthy lifespan; risk genes for leukemia that vary in incidence between genders and ethnic groups; whether variants in a set of gene candidates contribute to the basis of preeclampsia; and the spatial variation in the gut microbiome in response to antimicrobials and immunity pathways that can inform aspects of human irritable bowel disease.
