A new collaboration for early disease detection
January 2018
SHARING OPTIONS:

HEIDELBERG & SAARBRÜCKEN, Germany—An existing partnership is getting a boost with the news that Hummingbird Diagnostics GmbH and Saarland University have reached a comprehensive framework agreement regarding an expanded collaboration in molecular diagnostics. Their work will focus on validating miRNA biomarkers in blood samples to enable early detection of diseases such as lung cancer, COPD, Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. The plan is to assess approximately 5,000 samples from patients with the aforementioned diseases. The agreement covers intellectual property rights and the software, results and publications related to the work, and under its auspices, Hummingbird Diagnostics acquired rights in eight patents.

“Together with the teams of [Dr. Keller and Dr. Meese], we successfully identified many miRNAs from blood that may contribute to patient-friendly methods for early disease detection,” commented Jochen Kohlhaas, CEO of Hummingbird Diagnostics. “The new agreement enables us to collaboratively address further disease areas, such as neurodegenerative diseases.”
