July 2018
SHARING OPTIONS:

NEW YORK—According to Kalorama Information, roughly half of drug discovery research will be contracted out to contract research organizations (CROs) in three to four years, as reported in the company’s latest report, “Outsourcing in Drug Discovery: The Contract Research Organization Market, 8th Edition.” Kalorama estimates that the market for outsourced drug discovery is currently valued at $24 billion, noting that this market grew 17 percent in 2017. The organization states that “Between the $2.6-billion cost for a new drug, $117 billion of drug products with patent expirations and the thousands of pharmaceutical industry layoffs, the only way to fill the gap is outsourcing.” Bruce Carlson, publisher of Kalorama Information, said that “We believe the industry is at roughly 40 percent outsourcing for discovery services, and the outsourcing is on the increase.” Among the trends associated with this industry change is the selection of outsourcing partners in Asia and Eastern Europe, according to the report.
