BRAIN AG, BluCon ink research deal
October 2018
SHARING OPTIONS:

HESSE, Germany—BRAIN AG and BluCon Biotech GmbH have initiated a strategic research and development collaboration to identify and develop special microbial production strains. The agreement is initially slated to run several months, with the potential to extend it if certain milestones are met. BluCon has developed a bioprocess for producing lactic acid from industrial/agricultural cellulosic waste based on its proprietary bacteria, and its aim is to enable the production of poly lactic acid-based bioplastic at costs that can compete with fossil fuel-based plastics. Under this collaboration, BluCon will seek to further improve its microorganisms with classical biotechnologies.

“We are very experienced in industrial strain development programs. Besides classical processes in aerobic production organisms, BRAIN also provides a comprehensive technology portfolio for the cultivation and genetic engineering of strictly anaerobic bacteria. We are committed to help our partner BluCon Biotech to improve the space time yield of the production strain in a short period of time,” said BRAIN’s Dr. Martin Langer, executive vice president of corporate development.
