WHITEHOUSE STATION, N.J.Merck & Co. Inc. announced in December plans to establish an Asian research and development headquarters in Wangjing Park within Beijing, China. The new facility, which is part of Merck's plan to invest $1.5 billion in R&D in China over the next five years, will consist of 47,000 square meters of office and laboratory space. The expected completion date for the initial phase of construction is 2014, and once complete, the facility will maintain approximately 600 staff in the areas of drug discovery, clinical development, translational research, regulatory affairs and external scientific research programs. Other aspects of Merck's Chinese strategy include alliances with local companies such as its 2010 deal with Sinopharm to cooperate on vaccine sales and a recent agreement for a venture with Simcere to increase sales of three of Merck's drugs.
